Tidy house, tidy mind

3rd July 2020

Whether you love it or hate it, the positive effect that cleaning has on your home as well as your mental wellbeing is no hidden secret. There’s no better feeling than getting into bed when your sheets have been freshly washed and the feeling of calm that descends when you take in the wonderful smell of linen that has just been pressed! With that in mind and in a bid to help bring the zen back to your den, we have been looking at ways to bring the sparkle to both your home and your mind.

First things first, have a clear out! We all know the prospect of decluttering may be daunting, so we advise to start small. Whether you start with the odd socks’ basket, or plan to organise those shelves under the sink, we promise you, that once you start the process it becomes addictive and your house will soon be a clutter free zone! It is said that organised spaces are not only aesthetically more attractive but getting rid of things that you have been hoarding for years and years allow your mind to breathe and gives you more space creatively.

Secondly, dust those worries and cobwebs away! Whether you decide to use a traditional feather duster, or one of the colourful microfibre kinds, dusting is extremely therapeutic! The physical act of reaching those high corners and removing dust from the whole house creates good endorphins which is great for your mood. Make sure you get in all of the nooks and crannies of the home and remember to dust the skirting boards. Not only will this make you feel good, but it will be satisfying to know that you are removing dust mites and other allergens that can cause irritation. And the bending and stretching is good exercise!

Thirdly, get the marigolds ready and deep clean your appliances! Whether you hire an expert to come and clean the oven while you deep clean the microwave and washing machine, or you decide to take on the challenge and tackle it yourself, we can assure you that when your appliances shine, you’ll shine too. Studies suggest that as human beings we are drawn to shiny things and when that sparkle is a consequence of your efforts, it gives you a great sense of pride and accomplishment.

Lastly, give the whole house a good vacuum! We can appreciate how this boring household chore can just be plain awful, but hoovering is extremely important for a number of reasons. Not only does it help with the practical stuff, like protecting your carpets and helping them to last longer, but like dusting (and, let’s face it, all household tasks) it’s a great way to exercise too! The simple movement involves almost all of the major muscles of your body, helping you to stay active and healthy while doing valuable work too!

We hope that by using some of the tips above and creating a tidier home, you can truly start to feel calmer, happier and more productive.

And don’t just apply the thinking to your domestic environment either; the cleanliness and orderliness of your workspace is equally important, whether you’re working from home or if you’re back at the office the principle is the same; tidy home, tidy mind.

Happy cleaning!
